What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a nonsurgical outpatient procedure designed to treat small dilated veins, including spider veins (telangiectasias) and varicose veins. During this virtually painless treatment, a skilled vascular surgeon injects a sclerosant—a chemical solution—into your veins using a thin needle. The solution irritates the vein lining, leading to scarring and hardening. Over time, the treated vein disappears, and blood naturally reroutes to other veins in the area.
This treatment is often combined with laser vein therapy to achieve optimal results. Laser light targets your skin’s surface, heating and fading veins.
When is Sclerotherapy Needed?
There are two primary reasons for considering sclerotherapy:
1. Cosmetic Reasons:
Prominent Veins: Sclerotherapy is commonly sought for cosmetic purposes. While spider veins and some varicose veins may not be large, they can be noticeable.
Restoring Appearance: If you’re bothered by the visibility of blue, purple, or red veins on your legs, sclerotherapy offers a nonsurgical solution to enhance your appearance.
2. Medical Reasons:
Underlying Vascular Issues: Spider and varicose veins can be indicative of vein valve malfunction, peripheral vascular disease, or other vascular problems.
Symptoms: Leg pain, heaviness, and discoloration along with spider or varicose veins may signal the need for medical intervention.

Before your sclerotherapy appointment, Dr. Dagim, will guide you through any necessary preparations. Special tests such as ankle-brachial index (ABI), Doppler ultrasound, and other procedures may be recommended if vascular disease is suspected.
Results and Recovery:
Timeline: Typically, vein fading occurs within a few weeks, with complete fading in a month or longer in some cases.
Reliability: Sclerotherapy is a reliable, simple, and proven treatment for spider and varicose veins.
